The Book of Margery Kempe

Written 1432-1436

Although considered the first woman autobiographer in the English language, Margery Kempe was apparently illiterate, and had to dictate her story to two clerks. Because of this, scholars are uncertain whether Kempe is the sole author of her biography or if the story was edited or altered by the clerks. Nevertheless less the manuscript remains a celebrated (albeit odd) story of a woman's journey to eschew the ways of the world and pursue an intimate relationship with God.
